INCREDIBLE PHOTOS Abandoned Plane at Željava Airbase

TAKEN FROM THE SKY

There are many interesting locations near Plitvice Lakes, but one of them is not only very interesting, but also very mysterious.

It is called Željava Airbase, a top-secret underground airbase located on the border of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina under Plješevica Mountain.

The airport has been fully operating from 1968 until 1992, when the whole complex was mined and extremely damaged with more than 50 tons of explosives.

The last time a plane landed on Željava was in May 1992 and it stayed there. This plane is an old Douglas C-47 “Dakota”, the military transport version of the civilian passenger plane DC-3.

It is located at the entrance of the former Željava Airbase as a witness to the largest underground airport and military air base in the former Yugoslavia, and one of the largest in Europe.

Let`s go see it from the bird`s eye view!
