Navigating tradition – building experiences is a three-week volunteering project funded by the European Solidarity Corps program. It will include 20 youngsters 18-30 years old from Spain, Italy, Greece, Poland and Croatia.
The project consists of two phases: the first two weeks volunteers will stay in the Outward Bound Croatia educational center in Veliki Žitnik in the rural and mountainous Lika region, where they will learn about basics of woodwork and create furniture for the educational centre, have an environmental action in the village and meet local stakeholders who are working on the sustainable development of the community.
In the third week they will move to Brač island to volunteer with the Maritime Education Association in Sumartin, learn about maritime heritage and the challenges that this island community faces, they’ll work in the shipyard to restore a wooden vessel which will be used for educational purposes by MEA and also have environmental actions on different locations of the island.
In Veliki Žitnik volunteers will be mainly working with hand-tools to create different pieces of furnishing for the educational centre (shelves, cupboards etc.). They’ll also have time for creative personal projects. We’ll also have an environmental action in the village and possible further actions that help members of the community or grass-root organisations who are working to protect the environment in Lika.

"Instructors related to students fairly, firmly, consistently, taught valuable skills and there was a good mix of teaching and allowing independence. They were exceptionally in tune with the group dynamics and effectively 'tweaked and adjusted when necessary." – teacher #outwardboundcroatia #outdoorschool #natureschool #learningbydoing #differentschools #hike #backpack #map #compas #choosedirection #teamwork #intothewild #support #helping #trust #communication #outdoorlovers #mountains #bluesky #adventure #positiveenergy #joy #freedom #positiveattitude #facethechallenge #bestrong
Volunteers will also be divided in teams which will have their daily responsibilities: cooking, maintaining the center, taking pictures and videos, leading a morning workout, taking care of the tools and material. In Sumartin volunteers will be working on the restoration of a traditional wooden vessel which will be used for educational purposes by MEA. They’ll also clean beaches and bays from plastic pollution.
Veliki Žitnik is a small village in the rural and mountainous region of Lika, Croatia. It is 6 km away from the nearest bigger town of Gospić. Be aware that the nearest supermarket is in Gospić. The venue of the project is the OBC Educational Centre.

Here is a quick run through our two weeks long EVS project in Lika that yesterday came to an end. It was definitely colorful, helpful and fun for us and the local community, where our volunteers from 8 countries cleaned up the area, helped people in everyday needs and brought new games and workshops to schools, kindergarden and local cultural center 🙃 #evs #outwardboundcroatia #communityservice #potato #pineapple #wildwall
The OBC Educational Centre is fully equipped with two big dormitory-type bedrooms (male and female), bathrooms, a kitchen, a common room and a big yard, surrounded by endless forests of this beautiful area.
