Little shepherd from Velebit is the FIFA men’s player of the year

BRAVO LUKA!

Croatian player Luka Modrić has been named the Fifa men’s footballer of the year, yesterday at a ceremony in London. Modrić won his third Champions League title in a row in May and guided Croatia to their first World Cup final in July.

For the first time, there is a new name on The Best FIFA Men’s Player trophy, with Luka Modric succeeding the winner of the inaugural two awards – Cristiano Ronaldo.

“This trophy is not just mine, it’s for all my Real Madrid team-mates, for all my team-mates from the Croatia national team, for all the coaches that I have played for,” he added. “Without them this would not be possible and thank you a lot to them. This trophy is also for my family, without whom I would not be the player and person that I am.”

In his acceptance speech Modric also paid tribute to his hero Zvonimir Boban, captain of the 1998 Croatian side who excelled in France to finish third in the World Cup. “He was my big inspiration and that team gave us belief that we could achieve something great in Russia. Hopefully we can be the same for next generations,” said Modric.

The award was decided by national team coaches and captains, select members of the media and online voting.

In the rare video “Wolf Attack Sequence” published in July, you can see Croatian and Real Madrid football star Luka Modric at the age of 5 as a shepherd. You can also see wolf looking at him and his herd while Luka is jumping with a stick in his hand.
