UNUSUAL ATTRACTION

How much do you know about Senj, the biggest town between cities of Rijeka and Zadar well known for its strong wind called bora?

If not much, keep in mind that Senj is an old settlement founded on the hill Kuk more than 3000 years ago! In the pre-historic times under the fortified settlement, there was a port and a trade center, a place where people coming from different directions (inland, islands and the coast) could exchange their goods.

Fortress Nehaj was built in 1558 when the Turks and Venice were at the peak of their power. In those bitter times, Senj with its inhabitants resisted numerous attacks of the enemy trying to seize control of the town.  Breathtaking Nehaj placed on the hilltop was very difficult to access – this 18 meters high and 23 meters wide fortress could be reached by staircases via wooden bridge and then through the narrow double gate. The powerful walls were over 3 meters thick, so the inhabitants could sleep peacefully for centuries.

There is no wonder then that Croatian National Radio Television (HRT) is filming a special documentary right here is Senj called “Doba uskoka”. We don`t know much about the storyline, so we will wait until the premiere to be surprised.

Enjoy this marvelous photos filmed by Marjan Prpić Luka and if you want to witness the historic scenes firsthand, the filming in port of Senj will last until 20 April!
