One of the greatest treasures of the Plitvice Lakes is the diversity of the flora, which attracts people from all over the world. In fact, the rich diverse flora in the area is considered a natural phenomenon and it was declared an area of special value.

That is exactly why tourists enjoy coming to this unique nature which encompasses over 1400 types and subtypes of plants, which amounts to 30% of the total flora in Croatia. The diversity can be traced to the specific geographical positions, as well as geomorphological, climatic and ecological factors. It is a unique blend rarely seen around the world.

Plitvice Lakes consists of numerous rare, endemic and legally protected plants, chief among them the Lady’s Slipper, the most beautiful orchid in Europe, and the rare types of carnivorous plants are also very appealing to visitors.

Many people claim that the flora is an even greater treasure than the lakes, and some are discovering it only now.

We know that algae and moss are paramount to creating tufa which affects the morphology of the Plitvice Lakes, which makes these two worlds inseparable and intertwined.
