METAVERSE IN ZAGREB

Dolac market is the largest and most visited market in the city of Zagreb, located in the city center, between Ban Josip Jelačić Square, Kaptol and the upper city.

It is named after the old city settlement of Dolac, where it was built in 1930. At that time, Dolac was a kind of slum full of small houses densely stacked between Kaptol and the church of St. Mary. The demolition of that part of the city, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages, caused great discontent among the citizens. The Dolac location was chosen by architect Viktor Kovačić and designed by architect Vjekoslav Bastl.

The market consists of an open part with fruits, vegetables and dairy products and a covered part with meat and dairy products. Visitors are greeted at the top of the market steps by grandma Barica, a monument to sculptor Stjepan Gračan that was erected in 2006. The figure of a woman with a basket on her head symbolizes all the “kumice” – hardworking women from the Zagreb area who sell fruits and vegetables from their garden or make homemade cheese and cream.

Picturesque red Šestine umbrellas that protect sellers from the weather are one of the most famous symbols of this lively and favorite gathering place of all generations, both residents of Zagreb and its guests. More than 190,000 visitors visit the Dolac market in search of quality homemade food every week.
